Best Laid Plans

I have the best intentions to begin working on this newsletter well in advance of when it needs to be ready. But does that happen? No! Why doesnít it happen?†Because thereís so darn much going on around here!

I start the day by doing a quick overview of whatís on my desk. Freshly cut puzzles that need to be listed as In-stock on the web site,†new orders that have come in and need to be checked over. While Iím doing these things Iíll have several interruptions. ìJenn, can you check this puzzle for me?î ìWhat do you†think about this edge idea?î ìI think I messed up. Help!î These are all things I love doing, especially checking a puzzle before a cutter begins crafting. It gives me a great†opportunity to see whatís going on in their minds. I work with creative geniuses!

I often spend part of my day working on new designs. Molly Delaney might pop in to drop off the finished art for the latest Teaser, Susan Greenleaf may call to go over a new design. Steve is usually†cooking up something new, too, that needs to be discussed.

If Iím really lucky, Iíll talk or email with one of you. I love to hear how you liked your latest puzzle or help you pick your next†one. Oftentimes I feel like Iím talking with an old friend. Last week I spoke with several people who puzzled with us at our anniversary Shindig and I also gave a tour of Stave to a group of four†lovely ladies. What fun women! We chatted and laughed it up while I showed them around. I donít know who had the better time, me or them. I was tempted to take the afternoon off and join them in the†rest of their ventures for the day but the saw was calling me. Puzzlers. You are awesome people!

Life doesn’t get much better than this!

Taking it easy

It’s Summertime and the livin’ is easy, isn’t that what Billie Holiday sang? It may be easy for some but summer can cause a few problems for us. We’re a small shop, just 10 saws, and as much as we love our jobs we do have to take a little time off every now and then. When do most people want a vacation? Summer! So, if your puzzles take a little longer to get to you, that’s why! What have your favorite cutters been up to? Ginny had a couple of weeks with her hubby and grand kids, Barb traveled the wild west and Di took some nice long drives to nowhere in particular with her husband. A bunch more of us will be in and out for the next few weeks, me included, so please be patient with us. We’ll get your puzzles cut, I promise!

Tired But Happy

Iím tired. Weíre all tired. Donít†feel sorry for us because itís a great†feeling! We had an amazing time last†weekend at the Woodstock Inn,†celebrating our 35th anniversary†with a fabulous group of puzzlers.†Weíre lucky enough to be able†to talk with a large number of you†when you call but we donít get to†meet our puzzlers very often. We had a bunch of arrivals†Friday night for quiet puzzling but†the official festivities began†Saturday morning. Paula and Bri,†our Star Party Planners, organized†a bunch of games to keep everyone†puzzled throughout the day. Our†guests were challenged with games†like Guess the Rebus, Scrambled†Names and Guess the Silhouettes,†among others. We were handing†out prizes left and right!

In honor of our 35th†Anniversary we gave away over†$35,000 in prizes. We had prizes as†simple as Stave bumper stickers and†note pads and biggies like a $3,500†gift certificate. I Do
I bet most weddings take place†in the summer. The weatherís good,†itís easier for the guests who have to†travel, and you can be outside.†Another reason why I make this†assumption is because we cut more†wedding puzzles now than at any†other time of the year.†A puzzle is the†perfect way to†commemorate the†special day.†Whether itís your†day from 20 years†ago or tomorrow,†a son or daughterís wedding, or†your favorite niece, a Stave puzzle†is the perfect gift.

The Missing Piece
When you meet that special†someone, you feel like youíve found†that missing piece, right? They†seem to fill that little spot in your†heart thatís been empty, waiting for†just the right fit. Why not create a†puzzle to remember this incredible†time in life? The moment can be†relived every time the puzzle is†worked. We can fill it with the†silhouettes that represent your†perfect day: the proposal on one†knee, a horse and carriage ride to†the church, a dog standing in as†best man, the honeymoon safari to†Africa. No matter what made your†day unique, we can help you create†a keepsake that will be enjoyed for†years to come.

Itís your†anniversary, the music is softly†playing in the background, the†champagne is poured and the†candles are lit on the puzzle table.†Wonít it be nice to have a few hours†of your loveís undivided attention†while you work to put together the†pieces of your lives? We all know†times like this are few and†far†between in our day to day lives.

35 Years! Where Did They Go?

As the saying goes, time flies when youíre having fun. I think everyone at Stave†would agree! Weíre all wondering where the time has gone. Steve has created another new puzzle design in honor of our 35th Anniversary. Here’s a sneak peek at what he’s cooking up!

Getting My Facts Straight

Steve, on the far right, with fellow golf fanatics Tom, Jim, and Charlie.

Steve, on the far right, with fellow golf fanatics Tom, Jim, and Charlie.

Mea Culpa

You all know my knowledge of†golf is limited. My mom and dad†golfed, my son and husband golf†and, of course, your Chief†Tormentor, Steve, golfs. A lot! So†why canít I get the facts right?!

I previously regaled†you all with the story of Steveís trip†to the Augusta National Golf Club†to golf with one of my favorite†Stave puzzlers, Jim G., from†Birmingham, Alabama. It all came†about with a casual chat I had with†Mr. G. while he was ordering a†puzzle. ìIf Steve ever wants to play†Augusta National, let me know.î†Little did I know what an impact†those words would have on Steve.

Did You Catch Me?

Steve left for Augusta on†Thursday, May 13th, and returned†Saturday evening. When my phone†rang Sunday morning and I heard†who was on the other end of the†line I knew I was in for a great story.†It was everything Steve had hoped†it would be and so much more.

On Monday morning Steve†showed everyone the photos he had†taken and shared his adventure with†the whole gang. Needless to say, we†have all heard the stories several†times now. So donít you think I†could get my facts straight?!†Magnolia Drive, Magnolia Lane. A†water trap, a water hole. 210 feet, 210†yards. Whatís the big deal?! Ok, Ok,†Iíll give you the feet vs. yards thing†but the rest? Minor details to a girl†like me but HUGE for all you†golfers out there in the world.

Iím taking this opportunity to†admit my mistakes and make things†right. As much as I like to tease†Steve and embellish the story a bit I†do appreciate the thrill and honor it†was for him. The generosity of Mr.†G. is over the top and he presented†Steve with the opportunity of a†lifetime. But whatís even better is it†got a ton of brownie points for me!

Enjoy the pictures and please, if†you catch me in any mistakes, donít†tell Steve!

I guess I can’t always be right. (Don’t tell my husband!)

Brownie Points

What employee doesnít try to†earn extra points with their boss?†Anyone with half a brain knows†you try to impress them with your†skills, charm, wit and if you can†score a golf date for them at one of†the most coveted courses in the†country, You Do It!

Who You Know

Thatís just what happened a†few weeks ago. I love to chat with†our puzzlers when they call to order†so when Mr. G. from Birmingham,†AL., called to order a golf puzzle†for his son I found myself telling†him what a golf nut Steve is. Mr. G.†casually threw out an offer that†went something like this. ìLet me†know if Steve ever wants to play†Augusta National.î I responded†with something like, ìOh, how nice†of you. Iíll be sure to tell him.î†Little did I know the impact that†offer would have on Steve. If he†had mentioned Tiffany and Company or a Porsche Carrera I would have†ëgottení it but I guess I just donít†appreciate the finer things in the†golf world.

He Said What???!

Once the snow began melting†in Vt. I knew Steve would be†getting the golf bug so I got in†touch with Mr. G to see if he was†serious about the offer. It just so†happened he was putting together a†foursome for AGNC in just a†couple of weeks.

If you could have seen Steveís†face when I told him about the†invitation you would have laughed.†His jaw practically hit the floor.†ìAre you kidding?! Thatís the†toughest ticket in town! Itís the†opportunity of a lifetime! A dream†come true!î It was May 3rd and†Steve had barely blown the dust off†his clubs from the winter hiatus.†Could he get his game in shape by†May 14th? After a mad flurry of†trips to our local course, he had†worked the worst of the kinks out of†his swing. He was as ready as heíd†ever be!

Up To Par

Steve flew in the night before and met his fellow†golfers the following morning at the airport where they†were picked up by an Augusta National van. Iím†guessing he had goose bumps when they started driving†down Magnolia Lane. Itís one thing to see it on TV year†after year but to really be there!! The guys took a few†swings on the practice range and then they were off !†Steveís first drive was a respectable 210 yards. Mr. G.†made an impressive 290 yards!

Caddy Shack

Steveís caddy, Randy, was invaluable, coaching him†along the way. Apparently the course was very different†from what we have around here and Randyís knowledge†helped keep Steve out of a few rough spots. (Though he†did leave a few balls in the Par 3 water holes!) After the†nerves wore off and he found his groove he even†managed to par 3 out of 4 holes on the back 9. What†holes, you ask? The 13th, 15th, and 16th. My parting†words to Steve as he was leaving for his adventure?†ìDonít embarrass us!î Not to worry, he came home with†a respectable score, even breaking 100! And the icing on†the cake? After they finished playing the regular course†they played the Par 3 course, too!

Ever the gracious host, Mr. G. gave Steve and the†other two gentlemen a tour of the entire grounds where†they saw the coveted Masters Trophy and the lockers of†some of the greatest golfers of all time: Jack Nicklaus,†Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson. Amazing!

The August National Golf Course is now closed†for the summer season but Steve is still talking about it to†anyone who will listen. I think heís re-lived every hole at†least 10 times. Somehow, I think any place he plays in the†future is going to pale by comparison.

Making the Most of Things

Steve has thanked me profusely since the†moment this began to fall into place. Itís a little silly†because I really had nothing to do with it. All I did was†open my big mouth and mention how much Steve†enjoyed the game. Itís Mr. G. who should get the prize.†But Iím hoping I can get a lot of mileage out of this.†Steve now refers to me as Princess Jennifer (you can, too)†and I expect Iíll be signing my lifetime contract any day†now. If I wreck a puzzle or something and Steve starts†raising an eyebrow at me I think Iíll just pull out my tiara†and perch it right there on top of my pretty little pink†ANGC ball cap!!

Never underestimate the†power of making someone feel†special. Who†wouldnít be thrilled†to see the special†pieces you chose to†have cut into their†puzzle? A boy with a†soccer ball or a girl†on a pony. Take Notes!!!

We got quite a laugh the other day when H.S. of Waltham, MA., called with a request. ìCan you tell me†what the names are of the four puzzles I bought last November?î It seems that when he received the†Christmas gifts he tucked them away to put under the tree the following month. And then he promptly†forgot about them! The puzzles were discovered just the other day at the top of a closet, nicely wrapped and†awaiting their debut. Hereís where it gets funny. Mrs. S. wonít let him open the puzzles. She says heís got to†save them for this Christmas! Not being totally sure what he had ordered, he gave us a call so he didnít†accidently order the same things this year. I told Mr. S that I wouldnít want to live at his house. It would†drive me crazy knowing there were gifts tucked away, just waiting to be opened. He said he was going to†start working on that. After all, Fatherís day is coming right up! The moral of the story? Open your puzzles†up as soon as you get them!!!
